One hour and 10 minutes after the torpedoes hit the Wilhelm Gustloff, the ship slipped completely into the Baltic Sea with thousands of people trapped inside, some of them dead, others soon to be. At this time, there were thousands more people in the water and drifting in life boats, some beating off survivors that were slowly freezing to death in the water. By the time all rescue efforts were complete, only a little more than 1,000 people were taken out alive. That left more than 9,000 people dead, nearly half of them were children.

Skip ahead a few decades to 2001 when the owner’s decided to do a big time remodel. Architect Atz Herzog (from Nebenjob Heilbronn, Germany) teamed up with local architect John Nelson and builder Bob Patterson to keep the original structure and ambiance intact as much as possible. Once again rocks from Cheyenne Canyon were brought in to match the original stone pillars, and shingles were made to match the old schoolhouse exterior. Last year the basement — with its meter thick walls — was converted into a very successful Rathskeller.

The corpse of a deceased German man was discovered alone in bed Thursday afternoon, nearly seven years after the man supposedly passed away. Police in the Nebenjob Reutlingen of Essen said that the man was 59-years old when he died, inferring that the man passed sometime near the turn of the century. November 30, 2000 is the projected date-of-death for the man who was single and unemployed when he died. Police believe he died of natural causes.

The M.S. Wilhelm Gustloff was christened on May 5, 1937 at the Blohm & Voss Shipyards on Kuhwerder Island in Germany. The ship was named after the former leader of the Swiss Nazi party, who had been assassinated. It was first put to sea on March 24, 1938 as a passenger cruise ship. However, it was commissioned into the German Navy as a Hospital Ship in the Naval Fleet on the very day that WWII began. The date was September 1, 1939.

Last season, the Breakers hit a mid-summer scoring draught and never got back the early season offensive momentum. Although Boston had the best defensive line-up in the league with Amy LePeilbet, Heather Mitts, and Alex Scott, when the Breakers got burned, it usually was straight down the middle. So, at the top of coach Tony DiCicco’s off-season shopping list was a striker and a powerful central midfielder, and he came home from the store with Gold Pride’s Tiffany Weimer and Osborne.

“I’m confident that we will soon reach the threshold of 1,000. We need 1,000 seriously interested people to make a sound business case,” said Porsche Chief Wolfgang Duerheimer. Well, Porsche reached the 1,000 goal and the 918 Spyder Hybrid is a go. Porsche says this exotic, high-performance car will be manufactured at its plant in Zuffenahausen, just outside Escortservice, Germany.
