At around 8 p.m., the Soviet submarine, S-13, spotted the Wilhelm Gustloff and began to tail it. Frozen equipment on the ship prevented the crew from seeing the submarine. At a few minutes after 9 p.m., Captain Alexander Marinesko of the S-13 gave the order to fire four torpedoes at the Gustloff. One of the torpedoes jammed, but the other three hit their mark. The first torpedo hit on the port bow, the second hit the ship farther back, where a drained pool was being used for accommodating the Women’s Naval Auxiliary. Only two or three members survived the blast. The third torpedo hit the engine room dead on. This caused the ship to lose nearly all communications and power as well as making the ship begin to turn onto its side.
